I worked at American Cancer Society as a contractor (Less than a year)

Pros

Many of the people are very passionate and truly want to improve the lives of cancer patients. Many of them have great values and are people you would want to associate with.

Cons

They are a bit old school and not always open to change. Don't necessarily utilize you for your full potential. Make contract workers feel like outsiders at times.

Advice to Management

Be open to change- be more innovative and creative.

I worked at American Cancer Society full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It was great being with others who desire to make a difference and help those in need.

    Cons

Absolutely shocking in terms of the negative low level managers who continually criticize employees but rarely do anything to reward them or support them. This is un unprofessional place to work and they make no apologies for anything they do wrong including paycheck errors or anything else.

    Advice to Management

None - all the fedback which was given from many of my coworkers was blatantly ignored! This company does not seem to care what employees think or need or want. The bucks roll in no matter what so they seem completely uninterested in creating a healthy work environment.

I worked at American Cancer Society full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

More flexibility than other jobs and the ability to work from home was nice. I had nice coworkers who were willing to lend a hand as well.

    Cons

Pretty much everything else was negative. Although we had many trainings so many of them were repeats and didn't share any new ideas. Three day overnight, out of town trainings are difficult for people with families and this didn't seem to be a concern of ACS. Management was not well trained or well versed in how to be effective mangers. ACS is NOT a transparent company and a lot of changes were made without staff input that would have been crucial to improving staff morale. Turnover is very high, but when 50 and 60 plus hour weeks are worked consistently with low pay and little to no encouragement, what do you expect? Management did not listen to employees who were in the field and talking to constituents, volunteers and others involved in events specifically Relay For Life events.

    Advice to Management

Take classes to become better managers. Offer advice and help to your employees and don't push them off on to their coworkers. Set attainable goals and listen to the people who are out in the field.
