I worked at American Cancer Society full-time for more than a year

Pros

Great volunteers and mission, good benefits and salary for a non-profit, team building and idea sharing with other community representatives

Cons

Long hours, meetings just to meet, management discourages their employees from having a personal life (significant other, children, outside activities), managers do not treat people equally

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop being so political and treat people equally and fairly. Do not lie to us to our face about advancement opportunities.

I have been working at American Cancer Society full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Great Team
    Great Benefits
    Popular Company
    The missions of ACS

    Cons

    Low Salary
Not many growth opportunities, but expect more responsibilities with no raise or bonus
You will start out doing on job and can be assign anything by any other manager, even if they are not in your department.
The company is constantly changing and many people are afraid of losing their jobs.
They expect you to raise money and recruit volunteers not matters what your position is.
Even though its a non-profit...it feels very corporate

Big non-profit with lots of internal barriers to progress.

I have been working at American Cancer Society full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The size and reach of the American Cancer Society is it's greatest asset. It has a grass roots army of dedicated volunteers who are uber passionate about the mission and believe in the organization and community managers who can drive that mission. Compensation at the National level is good but at the divisional level not as good.

    Cons

It is an organization that is hindered by internal politics and jockeying for power. It over uses consultancy resources and spend too much on those resources rather than leveraging the intelligence of their own employees with years of experience. Though it claims to be customer centric its antiquated CRM system is a hindrance to improving it's relationship with customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your employees. There are so many at ACS that have years of experience that is being lost in the drive toward transformative change. Strive to create a culture of inclusiveness instead of driving for constant growing revenue and ignoring the needs of our customers to feel part of the worldwide movement to end Cancer.
