I have been working at American Council on Education

Pros

ACE is well-respected in the higher ed field; terrific work-life balance; very good benefits package; smart, talented staff; great location

Cons

higher ed policy and advocacy work take top billing always while other projects can suffer from lack of leadership attention; nontransparent decisionmaking at all levels; surprisingly nonstrategic decisions; poor communication among departments and across management and leadership

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider expanding beyond the narrow pillars of your mission; take staff morale seriously--it's very low; demonstrate true strategic thinking; show genuine compassion

I have been working at American Council on Education full-time

    Pros

Excellent Benefits Package, Lots of Paid Time Off, 35 hour work week, A Very Generous Employer Retirement Contribution, Great Location in Dupont Circle

    Cons

A culture of fear pervades and people are always concerned about getting fired, I know a lot of coworkers don't keep any personal belongings in their office so it's easier to get up and go when and if you get canned. Not very collaborative and departments work in a vacuum. There are cliques among staff and a lot of back stabbing that goes on between staff. The strategic direction is unclear.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more transparent with staff about decisions. Pay staff more equitably by position across the Council.
