I worked at American Diabetes Association full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits and vacation time. National support such as IT and finance were always helpful.

    Cons

Poor leadership at the local level. There seems to be a handful of ED's who do their job well. The rest come and go quickly which lead to poor performing offices and low morale. The ED's often lack connections, experience and confidence one should have at that level. Middle management, specifically fundraisers seem to have to go at it on their own versus having leadership open doors through board members and other high level contacts.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When hiring local leadership at the local level, please consult with top board members as to validity of each candidates experience. In certain markets it might be worth paying upper management more if the are quality fundraisers/relationship builders/cultivators- - the return on investment will be seen.
