Current Employee - HOME BASED SERVICE - Customer Care Professional in Chicago, IL

I have been working at American Express full-time for less than a year

Pros

The job is completely home based. No work related transportation costs, vehicle wear & tear or money spent on work attire. The company provides all the office equipment and they pay $75/month to cover internet and telephone. The call center is open everyday so setting your schedule should be a breeze. Advancement at home is possible or transistion to one of the on-site locations anywhere in the world. You are apart of a team.

Cons

You are committed to the schedule you create for 1-2 years so choose wisely. Like any job you may be asked to work holidays. Working at home is still working. If you like chit-chatting with co-workers all day this isn't the job for you. Yes, you do still need a babysitter (not a con just a reality).

I worked at American Express full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Paid - Vacations, Sick Time / Benefits / 401K
Professional Employees who know how to act professional.
When there is a reason to "party" or if they have extra money to treat their top employees - AMEX goes all out.

    Cons

A lot of cliques. If you plan to move up, identify the "right" cliques and dont stay in one job too long - move around! Network, network, network! If layoff is a factor, dont relocate unless you need a way to get back home and the new location is located near your hometown. If you are relocating, chances are in 6 months your job will be shipped off shore and youll be layed off anyway.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of micro managers in your organization! People who have been with the company a long time and perform, dont need micro managing to preform well. Get rid of frivolous ways to reward people. Who needs an extra notepad or shiny new pen? Go back to the steak dinners, limo treatment and renting space for Christmas parties.
