I worked at American Express full-time (More than 5 years)

Pros

very strong corporate culture Very good pay and conditions Excellent work/life balance good career progression opportunities lots of nice people work there!

Cons

Very 'american' business style - not unsurprisingly Can have a very narrow view of the market and opportunities Lack clear direction and view of their strengths and market position

Advice to Management

Be realistic about your position in the market - Amex is never going to challenge Visa/MC as an issuer. Realise your strengths and don't compromise a premium customer base as it only undermines the possibility of charging a premium discount rate.

I have been working at American Express full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Big company with a lot going on -Diverse set of products and services -Surprising amount of opportunity / lots of gaps in the business model -Strong brand platform; people really like seeing the name on your resume -Younger folks tend to be quite smart and sharp

    Cons

    - Highly political culture; 2yr shuffle in roles means almost no one is an expert in what they do - Over emphasis on brand; drink-the-koolaid mentality - Mixed talent among mid-senior leadership = highly political environment at VP-SVP level - Lack of big-scale strategic focus; alot of tactics, less transformation

    Advice to Management

Keep people in their jobs for more than 2 years; create a culture where experts are experts, and are listened to as such; less focus on Mck/BCG advice, more focus on people who really know the business and are already in-house.

    Cons

Tactical, VP's stint too short, very year-on-year approach, incompetent senior mid management, Traditional thinking, risk averse which in turn effects business, Conservative (most aspects) , poor collaboration skills within teams, prefer tenure over talent which effects pay and productivity, double standards in expectations, Favouritism, slow on innovation, do-less-pronounce more-look busy and we will promote you.

    Advice to Management

Management could be open critical discussions, surveys, etc. forgo perception driven environment embrace individual difference
