I worked at American Express full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

- genuinely good people are your coworkers
- cares strongly for the end customer
- deep respect for personal life situations (e.g., children, sexual orientation, etc)
- great nyc benefits (e.g., Tribeca Film Festival employee promotions, free admission to major museums, etc)
- fairly good health center
- large company -- if you look for a specific role, it probably exists somewhere

Cons

- compensation for stellar employees is lacking, producing a culture of employees with mediocre levels of ambition
- hard to "get rid of lemons", so you'll likely end up working with some bad apple(s) that you can't avoid
- very director- and vp-driven office/team norms where you could find yourself working for a leader who is very pro or very against working virtually or a leader who is very into facetime or not which vastly changes your expected hours in the office

Advice to ManagementAdvice

- promoting from within should render comparable compensation to hiring externally; this will result in appropriately rewarding and motivating existing employees to put forth their best work.

Former Employee - Customer Service Representative In Alex Rewards Department in Jacksonville, NC
Former Employee - Customer Service Representative In Alex Rewards Department in Jacksonville, NC

I worked at American Express full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

You get a lot of experience in customer service. It is nice to get to talk to all kinds of different people . Has call centers in a lot of different places , allows you to travel .

    Cons

They don't pay that well for customer service reps.
The bonuses are almost impossible to receive .

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Should value your customer service reps more , because they take care of your customers. Give them more benefits than you give them , because the job is very stressful ,its not easy dealing with people that get mad, scream , and curse you , cause they are already in a bad mood . Also make it easier for the customer to get to the right dept ( i.e. automated phone system ).
