I have been working at American Express full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Solid company. Continues to evolve in an ever changing mobile world. The company has a strong culture of putting the customer first. You can feel good about the work you do here.

Cons

Frequent restructuring of different divisions leads to displacement of employees. Several times in the last 3 years different groups have been displaced, sometimes affecting several hundred people.

    Pros

    Great culture, but like any other big corporation it has its corporate problems one being outsourcing.

    Cons

    - People at the same band level can have a wide discrepancy in salaries.
    - Different division seem to have different rules. Or have not adopted the standard policies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to your lower end band level employees.
    Stop outsourcing, your killing your own bread and butter.

    Pros

    I have been there for 7 years and they are very employee-focused. It is a fun environment with great perks.

    Cons

    They are constantly reorganizing - every year there are large layoffs, so it's not a very secure environment. Also, to get promoted, it is often a lot of additional work - they encourage movement at the lower levels so you have to work on building your "brand" outside your group in order to get a new job - and you have to apply for promotions for the most part. It's not just a work hard and get recognized environment - you have to work at your day job while working on finding a new job - constantly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    A little less focus on broadening people's skills across the company - there are other ways to do that besides encouraging people to move on once they just start excelling in their role - think about promoting from within teams more.
