I worked at American Express full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Amex has always been ahead of the game in the way they treated employees though some things have had to change due to financial issues. People tend to spend their entire career at the company.

Cons

There need to be more females as senior management. Louise Parent has been the only female on the senior management team for decades. She is great but there has to be more like her out there.

I have been working at American Express full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Amex has great work-life balance, which is fantastic for spending time with family, and exploring cities and travelling. There are fantastic people, and since the environment is very collaborative, you get to work with very diverse and talented group of people.

    Cons

Amex has not been innovative in recent years, and not break the glass barrier to try new products like NFP or Mobile banking. They have always followed the competition in new technologies. Even employees use old technologies (phones and laptop) and medicre services to get their work done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please understand that just because you spend a lot of money on PR, doesn't make your product the best in the market. Others have done it already and done it for cheaper. Burst the bubble that Amex is the best, and actually try to be the best.

    Pros

Great for work life balance. Most people typically work from about 9 to 6, which is hard to find at a big company in New York City. Also offer a lot of mobility across functional units - which is a great for learning new skills and keeps things interesting.

    Cons

Lot of politics the higher you go. There are a lot of people who just work the system without producing results who just keep escalating. Very slow moving, hierarchical and difficult to change.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Less time on talk about cultural change - actually enact it
