I worked at American Express as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of Knowledgeable professionals, very compliant and willing work force, cordial and friendly atmosphere in a pleasant working environment. Salaries are above average, excellent benefits (for perm employees, as I was a contractor). Most managers and coworkers are happy to help each other when needed and the work load allows. There are many web-based training to be completed which make for a quicker knowledge ramp-up to a complex and extensive body of regulatory and compliance operational rules & guidelines which must be learned. Great way to advance in the inner working know-how of the company and the payment industry in general.

    Cons

The work-load can be overwhelming, especially in my position and deadlines are crucial. That translates into big time pressure. It was apparent that most co-workers were working way more than 50 - 60 hours / week.Often It was difficult to get the help needed from coworkers. Not because they were unwilling, rather because they were swamped with work of their own. There is just not enough time in the day to complete the work, most of the time. This will impact you physically and mentally. In one word fatigue is the norm. One of the most obvious negative human factors operating was the rigid hierarchical nature of management. for example, it was frowned upon or a touchy matter to address executives in "high" ranking positions. A very good reason must exist in order to do so. This curtails the free flow of information and causes unnecessary delays.

    Advice to Management

Management needs to find a way to provide the workforce with a better work-life balance which translates into real benefits for the high quality workforce there. Also the kitchen area facilities could use a bit of help. they are way too small in relation to the larger work-force.
