I worked at American Express part-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

co-workers were great
It used to be a great company, for over 20 years, but not any more

Cons

Management has put unrealistic requirements on the travel agents. They have reduced staff and demanded higher productivity. They want more, faster, and no mistakes. They have gone so far overboard it's unbelievable and for most not obtainable. Stress, stress, stress, is what you get if you work for AMEX.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees, don't just say this is how it is live with it. What you demand is not possible for everyone, some accounts demand more time and attention and unless you throw good customer service out the window you can't work faster, take more calls, and do a good job.

    Pros

Great solid company, will probably always be around.

    Cons

Culture is very negative. Leaders are too busy protecting themselves to develop their people. Most encourage backstabbing as a way to get ahead.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop some courage. The best managers in this company tend to leave after a few years. They get tired of banging their heads against a wall of mediocrity. Stop playing it safe.
