Poor Frontline Leadership and too much outsourcing

I worked at American Express full-time

    Pros

Good benefits Great Vacation and Sick Leave Front-Line Employees are dedicated and some of the best

    Cons

-Intimidation from leadership with threats to outsource and works diligently to get rid of those that speak up on pulse surveys or report the incidents to HR. -Nothing done to improve poor survey results, keep the same leaders resulting into very threatening and retaliation if you speak up and willing to get rid of those that do not agree with the leadership style.. -More effort put into firing employees that speak up on surveys versus addressing the issues of front-line leadership. -Excessive use of sick leave by employees due to being unhappy, mistreated and overworked with no appreciation. -High turnover due to poor front line leadership and employees getting ill due to mistreatment and stress of environment. -External Sales and Service Leaders in position due to tenure not due to ability to effectively lead a unit. -Ran by Good Ol' Boys and unwilling to accept change or improve processes even though many of the processes AMEX can improve to help the employees instead employees are constantly being written up. Front-line leaders have too much power and the flow of communication to address employee issues is being hindered.

    Advice to Management

Be aware of what is happening in Phoenix in your External Sales and Service area. There is a huge problem with morale and intimidation which is not what American Express is about. Be sure your employees have a voice without the constant worry about retaliation.

    Pros

One of the most powerful brands in the world. The work force is very smart and resources are abundant. I was always impressed with the people I worked with on a daily basis.

    Cons

The internal hurdles to getting things done are extensive and it can really take the wind out of your sales.

    Advice to Management

Do more to really free up the creative capital for your very smart work force.
