Former Employee - Agent In Training in Portland, OR

I worked at American Family Insurance full-time for more than a year

Pros

Support, Training, Great Work Environment, given a great deal of freedom. Offered Life insurance. Has a marketable Brand Name. Excellent marketing campaign. The State management was great to work with. Mentoring and Accountability was good.

Cons

Software to process application and run auto quotes outdated, Prices not very competitive. Limited products to offer in State of Oregon. Limited ability to offer commercial insurance. Very conservative quoting matrix. Needed more direction and guidance for marketing efforts. Had to turn away too many opportunities.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Update your quoting & consolidate software. Keep your small promises and don't make big promises.

Former Employee - Making Better Money and I Am Free in Saint Louis, MO

I worked at American Family Insurance full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Decent Claim Service. Agents are taught insurance, billing, underwriting skills and many other skills that are great for this fabulous career. Can make very good money as long as you play along. Get to meet some wonderful people of all kinds, this can change your life in many good ways. Get to take great trips with the company if you sell your ass off in Life Insurance.

    Cons

Company smiles at your face and then stabs you in the back, so do not rust your ASM. EVER! Agents are made into puppets, they are treated bad if you do not sell Life Insurance and hit all of your impossible company goals. Company management are changing this company for the worse. There is no Family in American Family anymore. Agency Support is at its worse. Your stress level will make you sick. The trips you win are not free, you get 1099 on everything at the end of the year. Take the money and take your family somewhere else. Cheaper!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fire Yourself! You are all a disgrace for the way you let management treat agents. You tell us things are tight and we have to work harder and then you have the balls to take millions of dollars in bonuses. You took your bonuses right after you cut the throat of many good agents and employees. You smile to the agents but you are not a friend, you have become the enemy, and not because of the employees or agents. Its because you have no idea how to lead and you hire inept people. You all stand up there and think your s hit don't stink. Guess what? Its does and all of the agents know it. 7 out of 10 agents are unhappy, the balance have brown on their nose from placing it up your a ss or just young and don't know any better yet. You are losing your best agents Jack!

I worked at American Family Insurance full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Covered parking to keep snow off your car, flex schedules, nice office building with lots of windows and walking trails, pay is competitive. Was a great place to work up to a couple years ago. It still can be okay if you have the right manager and are in the right division.

    Cons

Too many VP's are more into being yes-men and advancing their own careers than leading and developing their own divisions. If you are a good worker, you are often "rewarded" by a tons of extra projects to make up for less competent coworkers and for management who is too busy saying "yes" to all requests rather than prioritizing and coming up with a reasonable workload. However, hard work and loyalty isn't as important as being part of the good old boys club when coming to promotional opportunities. Reorgs are a common way for new officers to demonstrate their worth which often leads to a great deal of stress as underlings must reapply to keep their jobs and no real efficiencies are gained from the new structure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't just say that you want ideas from the bottom to the top but actually let that happen. Also, address incompetent workers directly by removing them from their positions. Quit using constant reorganizations as a way of removing workers you don't want in positions. Making talented workers reapply for a job they have had all along and performing well is stressful and demoralizing. Quit taking your employees for granted or you may find yourself in real trouble when the economy rebounds and it is once again an employees job market.
