I worked at American Family Insurance full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Good training for P and C, great lodging, and food allowance during training. Fair customer service. Claims is marginal at best.

    Cons

Computer network is outdated, training for life insurance was poor, considering that's what they want you to sell. Like most captive insurance companies they can't decide what they want to sell, especially in conmmercial. They're competive one year in a commercial product the next year they aren't. They want you to sell live insurance but their premiums are so much higher than their compeditors you can't sell it. And they don't offer life products for everyone. They lie to you all the time. They will tell you its your business but micro manage and tell you what you can and cannot do or they will take away you compensation. Your an independant contractor, treated like an employee. They are great for firing people like an employer, but get away with telling you that your an independant contractor. So you invest your money into the business to help it grow and if they don't agree with the way your running it they will terminate your contract and you lose the money you invested into what you thought was your business. Don't disagree with the company or they will figure out a way to terminate you. They don't tell you at time of contract signing that the agency you are getting will not have the amount of policies in it they told you it had when they interviewed you. If your not a big life insurance producer, your treated like a second rate citizen. They also don't tell you that you have to sell life insurance to remain as an agent. Their DM's, most do not have more than one to two years experence as an agent and were not great agents themselves. They are more concerned about what JD Powers says about them than, working on products and rate that their agents can sell.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find DM's that are educated and more concerned about selling insurance instead of where are we going after the meeting to have a cocktail. Sell life products customers want to buy instead of gimick life products and minimum term death benefits higher that most customer want to buy. Plus your P and C rate are to high in all states except Wisconsin, and any city or town where you have your underwriting offices.

I worked at American Family Insurance full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

They have been losing their customer base for years. Now trying to attract new business by buying weak companies. Leadership still pulls in hundreds if thousands of dollars in bonuses while they have been doing massive layoffs that they write off as "retirements."

    Cons

Employee trust and engagement is so low they won't do a survey. Loyal, successful employees are let go without a reason. Yet according to the leaders "we are better than ever"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your professional success came from the people that got you where you are at. Shame on you for turning your back on those loyal men and women while you line your own pockets and fool yourselves that you are doing the right thing.
