I worked at American Family Insurance full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Flexible work schedules, excellent facility, reasonable benefits, excellent location for HQ, excellent sales force, strong capital position. So long as you stay aligned with the correct executives, working there is highly enjoyable.

    Cons

There is no clear direction. The mission of the organization is clear, but the communication of how to achieve that mission is lacking. The executive wing are all trying to position themselves for the president's position when Schultz retires in a few years, so each has their own posturing going on which confuses downstream issues. There is no accountability for executives, so there is no downside to them promising everything and dumping it on their subordinates. Projects take forever and resource contention due to failure to reign in scope or do any real prioritization and alignment of organizational function make working there a confusing and frustrating prospect. Those who do try to hold the line on scope are punished. Add to that the constant changes in executive structure and its a wonder that AMFAM isn't shrinking and losing money even faster than it has been. Luckily in 2012 they barely grew and had a sub-par combined ratio by industry standards so naturally the executives paid themselves the largest incentive payment received in recent years. Go them. Rank and file folks saw messaging around expense ratio and the need to be frugal

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out what you want to do. Rank the priorities of how to accomplish them and then allocate resources based on that priority list. Give individuals accountability and when they fail to live up to expectations, get rid of them. Pay bonuses based on real targets and connect executive comp to performance accountability. Lastly, figure out how to be a good insurance company rather than trying to figure out how to add something that will be "really cool." Insurance is your business. If you want to improve, innovate around...you know, insurance..

I have been working at American Family Insurance full-time for more than a year

    Pros

You learn how to live your life with stress

    Cons

Horrible management, very stressful. No one ever seems to enjoy their job at American Family. Majority of Employees truly hate their jobs due to the stressful atmosphere. Very little room for advancement because there are too many older people working there holding down those upper positions.
