Pros

American Family's pay is generally pretty good and the benefits are above average.

Cons

Hopelessly ancient and obsolete software and systems. Almost nothing is integrated-so much so everybody has two monitors because of the need to have so many applications open at the same time. Staffing is kept to a bare minimum and there are not enough people to handle the workload. Pay for Performance rating system is skewed to prevent decent raises for experienced employees. This does nothing more than encourages an employee to do the minimum amount to get by Good qualified people do not get promoted if they dare to question things. Senior management prefers to promote sycophants. As a result nothing improves because management does not want to hear anything negative. They never ask the front line employees for ideas on how things should be run or improved. They prefer to rely on outside consultants. They spent millions to have a consulting firm determine third party adjuster's settlements were higher than company adjusters. This despite the contract adjuster's fees were greater the higher the settlement amount! Lately, almost all policies and decisions are made to garner a better J.D. Powers rating.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire enough people to handle the workload. Quit hiring consultants and listen to your employees. Bring your information systems into the 21st century. Dare to hire senior management who will tell you something other than what you want to hear.

    Pros

The above-ground bomb shelter they call an office complex will last through any number of tornados. It looks and feels like a prison.

    Cons

I have never witnessed such terrible communication between departments and all the resulting problems it causes, yet nothing is ever done about it. The company politics is staggering. I couldn’t in good conscience ask my worst enemy to work there. Their programs and systems are constantly breaking. They haul out new programs, they break, and instead of fixing them, they roll out more. I was told from the beginning, don’t use logic and you’ll be fine. There is a lot of dead weight around there that the managers look right through. Everything is a major production or not allowed, therefore, nothing ever gets accomplished. Yes, they are large but they act as if they’re Microsoft or Exxon.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Know what your employees are doing. Communicate with other departments. To the IT Manager, the only way around your mess is to fire everyone and start anew.

I have been working at American Family Insurance

    Pros

The best reasons to work for American Family Insurance would be the mission and the value that senior management places on employees. American Family as a company cares about their employee and wants them to succeed professionally by providing opportunities to further their industry education or general continuing education. American Family provides tools to help develop your career path if you are interested in continuing with the company and it's a mutual company so the employees, customers and shareholders all have a say in the company's success. Senior management are personable and approachable and has an open door policy. Another cool thing is that they have their own egreeting cards for all occasions for employees to use. The retention of employees are high here and there are more employees that have been here more than 10 years which is amazing.

    Cons

Some of the downsides of working at American Family Insurance would be the communications of important issues and the changes that are being taken place. The transitioning of alignments in each division affecting employee morale and business. The technology is lacking upgrades. Training is not detailed and poor for new hires.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To listen to the concerns of front line employee and to implement the changes base on what the front line employees are experiencing and listen to what the customers are needing and to provide that need in order to retain and attract more policyholders.
