American Family Insurance – “Can J.D. Powers Fix Our Information Systems?”

American Family's pay is generally pretty good and the benefits are above average.
Cons
Hopelessly ancient and obsolete software and systems. Almost nothing is integrated-so much so everybody has two monitors because of the need to have so many applications open at the same time. Staffing is kept to a bare minimum and there are not enough people to handle the workload. Pay for Performance rating system is skewed to prevent decent raises for experienced employees. This does nothing more than encourages an employee to do the minimum amount to get by Good qualified people do not get promoted if they dare to question things. Senior management prefers to promote sycophants. As a result nothing improves because management does not want to hear anything negative. They never ask the front line employees for ideas on how things should be run or improved. They prefer to rely on outside consultants. They spent millions to have a consulting firm determine third party adjuster's settlements were higher than company adjusters. This despite the contract adjuster's fees were greater the higher the settlement amount! Lately, almost all policies and decisions are made to garner a better J.D. Powers rating.
Advice to Senior Management
Hire enough people to handle the workload. Quit hiring consultants and listen to your employees. Bring your information systems into the 21st century. Dare to hire senior management who will tell you something other than what you want to hear.
