I have been working at American Greetings

Pros

The pay is good and there are some manages that are very good at what they do.
The onsight resturant is amazing!

Cons

Upper management is not understanding working families.
During their performance review process they have a policy that 10% of all employees are put on a performance improvement plan. It's pretty miserable working with that 10% who didn't get raises and don't understand why.
Hours are long and often the expectations are not realistic
Work in a silo, no communication or interaction between departments that should be working collaboratively.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

You offer tunition reimbursement to those seeking an MBA, however you are not creating an enviroment that is flexible to allow people to leave by 5 once a week if they are in class.

    I worked at American Greetings

    Pros

You have a lot of independence. No one looks over your shoulder. There are some genuinely great managers and employees.

    Cons

The business has taken a beating over the last 8-10 years and it seems like morale has fallen off a cliff. The senior management team is purely reactionary in an environment that calls for them to be more visionary. Middle and upper level management positions are primarily filled incestuously (friends promote friends) and often the people promoted are not remotely appropriate for their new position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the company private. Stop worrying about the whims of Wall Street. Remove all family members from daily business operations (except Zev). And be willing to take a risk. Do something really exciting and different. The talent is there, trust them.
