AHA sucks the life out of you

I have been working at American Heart Association

Pros

Wonderful volunteers
Good benefits and vacation

Cons

Bad management
Toxic culture
Lousy staff morale
AHA is like a bad episode of Project Runaway - you're either "in" or you're "out"
If you're "out" forget about advancement. Skillless suck ups are golden, workhorse admins are abused and unappreciated.

I have been working at American Heart Association

    Pros

Raising money to save lives is rewarding
    Meeting survivors
Connecting with supportive members of the community

    Cons

    Zero work/life balance
    HUGE egos running the organization
Angry/bitter managers who forget why the organization is raising money
Employees constantly berated for what they "could have done better"
Either bow down to management or lose your job, regardless of how well you're doing your job

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Appreciate the effort, dedication and commitment of staff
Quit coming down on staff for outcomes far out of their control
    Exercise compassion and understanding
Understand that managing means mentoring, coaching and inspiring -- NOT threatening, instilling fear, putting people down and engaging in clique-like behavior
CHANGE THE CULTURE (if you have to say out loud daily that you want employees to "value people, collaborate purposefully and manage their time in a healthy way," then it's most likely NOT happening!)
Recognize that morale is LOW, turnover is HIGH and employees are NOT happy

A very unhealthy place to work, mentally and emotionally

I have been working at American Heart Association

    Pros

You get a paycheck every two weeks. Hands only CPR is great, and a needed training. That's about all for AHA.

    Cons

    Cons:
This is like working in a sorority house. It absolutely is a mean girls club
Management is terrible. They criticize you personally nothing is based on work performance.
There is no recognition for a job well done
There is plenty of critiscm and micro managing
Goals are constantly changing, you'll never win
Senior manager has no clue what's going on, not do they care
The favortism in these offices is out of control

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people with respect. Everyone deserves at least a little respect. Realize you are a manager, not friends with those employees you like and enemies with those you don't.
