I have been working at American Heart Association full-time

Pros

Some really good people work for AHA.

Cons

Some really bad people work for AHA, Mostly Managers
See too many good employees terminated just because their manager dislikes them
You have no one to turn to if you have issues with your manager
Managers are protected regardless of their performance or infractions
HR doesn't help employees they are there to find a way to terminate
Employees are "Bullied"

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire an HR person that is ethical and is willing to stand up to management if they are wrong. Allow employees a voice.

    It's ran like a for-profit corporation, I feel deceived.

I have been working at American Heart Association

    Pros

The people on working in Health Strategies are amazing and implement some really great community programs. Competitive salary, in the non-profit world.

    Cons

It's all about the "bottom line" and will use guilt or "any means necessary" to get there. It's not about the mission. High turnover. Shady practices that are never officially put into writing, like the best practices, but are praised if it contributes to the bottom line.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Asking questions is not management, provide solutions. Just because it works on paper does not mean it will work in the real world.

I have been working at American Heart Association

    Pros

    Very meaningful mission
    Good benefits
Management strives to keep AHA relevant and progressive and focused on obtaining the mission
    Dedicated staff

    Cons

Upper management needs to take a stand that every program idea is not worth investing staff time and donor dollars in. We dont want to waste a single dollar on ideas that don't move AHA toward the mission. Staff end up working on efforts that don't give results over and over again. It gets disheartening.
Its a non profit. Don't expect to get rich working at AHA. If money is your driver, work somewhere else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold sr execs responsible for projects that don't pay off for AHA over and over again. Any dollar spent should be judged by the question: will this reduce cardiovascular disease or stroke and by how much.
