I worked at American Heart Association full-time (more than a year)

Pros

- lots of 'corporate' support from regional and national HQ
- great organization with a notable mission and reputation

Cons

- very aggressive fundraising goals, difficult to achieve
- lots of 'after hours' work
- no separate 'sick' time (aka need to use 'vacation' time when sick)

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fundraising goals are handed down from management with (seemingly) little intelligence from those in the field. Unrealistic goals can diminish motivation of employees that already work tirelessly for the mission.

I worked at American Heart Association full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Supporting the mission of saving lives through education and programs.

    Cons

Little to no work life balance as they claim to have it but youou better make sure you are "saying" the right things because there are a lot of cliques and only even if you are doing an amazing job if you are not in the clique, things will not be fun. Tons of politics, skewing information, misleading donors to get management off your back so they can meet their goals to bonus. Management is flavor of the day and promoted off how well the clique likes you and if you had good numbers for at least one campaign season, no matter what you had to do to get those number.

I have been working at American Heart Association full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Organization closes during week of Christmas, good benefits.

    Cons

Employees don't trust leadership and managers and from what I saw, it was for good reason. The organization has very few programs that it manages -- donations are primarily for education and their impact is impossible to measure. Donors would be better off supporting the hospitals in their communities. They can't point to lives they are directly impacting and their model is outdated. Organization does not understand fundraising and therefore fundraising staff "disappear" constantly.
