Current Employee - On-Call Nurse in Atlanta, GA
Current Employee - On-Call Nurse in Atlanta, GA

I have been working at American Hospice

Pros

Clinical competence of on-call nurses

Cons

Total clinical incompetence of clinical mgmt - no recent clinical experience; poor clinical judgment
Untrustworthiness of administration and management
Harassment and micromanaging of professional staff
Too much "passing the buck" - managers do not communicate process/progress in resolving patient issues
Pass over employee concerns - no support
Administrators "on-call" pass the buck and leave nurse unsupported

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replace current clinical mgmt with C-O-M-P-E-T-E-N-T, more recently clinically-active RN
Survey your professional staff about above concerns - will HAVE to be anonymous

Started out as wonderful, then it reached the point where $ were more important than quality healthcare

Former Employee - Admission Nurse in Richmond, VA

I worked at American Hospice full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Place great emphasis on new hire orientation; Team work was great about nursing staff

    Cons

Balancing personal and professional could be challenging; Benefits (insurance) was costly to the employee; No real opportunities for career advancement

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I know the bottom line is important and without money, there would be no jobs. Instead of making cuts at the actual direct patient care level, maybe look at eliminating positions in mid and senior management (along with their assistants).

Compassionate care of terminally ill and their families

I have been working at American Hospice (more than 5 years)

    Pros

wonderful caring staff, work well together, provide compassionate care for patients and families alike, very giving people with hearts of gold

    Cons

lack of adequate supplies, lack of adequate staffing, new management with backwards priorities who do not support employees but make poor purchasing decisions and then look only at bottom line - staffing ratios are a joke and put nursing licenses on the line; "PRN"nurses not given raises or bonuses, but expected to work holidays and in past were at least paid time-and-one-half for holiday hours worked, no longer! Now only FT people will be paid 'holiday'time

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

listen to your nursing staff ... we know how to care for patients and families and we know how much help we need and the supplies we need to do our job right and without "prn "nurses you would totally sink so you better start making pay raises and reinstate the holiday pay if you expect us to work
