Gossip is King and Cancer in this place. Good old boys network still exists there. No real science.

    Pros

Lots of networking opportunities. Great friends. Lots of chances to see great speakers and exhibits. Looked great on my c.v.

    Cons

The "scientific" community at this place is mainly held together with a great deal of self importance, but no real experience. Jobs are hard to come buy. Unless you are under-quallifed, and enjoy faking your knowledge level, It's exhausting. Stay away from volunteering. It's not a "door in" as you will be used forever. No end in site, no matter which department. Management is utterly impotent at solving day to day issues. Gossip is the only way to communicate. Most people spend about 4-5 hours a day really working.

    Advice to Management

Management: you are just as eligible to be evaluated by your staff, as you are evaluating them. Employees do talk. Be professional. Do not talk to your colleagues about problems in your department. Treat people with respect, including maintenance staff. Hiring practices should be transparent. Management who don't have the proper credentials should have a deadline to reach those goals. This is a constant issue at AMNH.

  2. Management transforms an easy enjoyable job into a nightmare!

Supervisors treat visitor services reps. with very little respect.
During busy days you get shorter breaks.

    Advice to Management

Management should be trained on how to treat employees with courtesy and respect.
