Pros

Worked with very experienced professionals. Great benefits. The entire leadership team has put lots of investment in modernizing the entire brand and workplace.

Cons

You can always experience long hours during a disaster, but this is nothing new. Also, as a nonprofit, you know it's going to be difficult to offer competitive salaries.

    Pros

Very prestigious organization with over 100 years of experience. Tends to bring out the best in some and the worst in others. The work that the organization does is great and they always put the clients first. Very dedicated employees.

    Cons

Very low pay and at times compensation does not match experience or education or living area. No procedures for removing non-performing employees leaving everyone else stuck cleaning up the mess. No exit planning, if someone decided to walk away today all of their knowledge and skills are gone too.

    Advice to Management

Work on promoting from within don't rely on hiring from the outside. You need people who understand the culture and feel of a non-profit organization. Work harder to keep volunteers engaged on the local level. It's always easy to find people looking to work on national operations, but the ones who are local, especially in big cities tend to be forgotten or not engaged enough. Try to focus on volunteer management by volunteer leadership that would help a lot. Give VRD support to do these things don't bog them down.

    Pros

Generally pleasant experience with the folks at our chapter They are good at mobilizing community volunteers, which is always helpful in a nonprofit

    Cons

Bureaucracy that dictates vast changes that often make no sense at the ground level Top-down corporate management style with little consultation with boots on the ground Promotion of people who play well with upper management rather than those who are most efficient at their jobs

    Advice to Management

Consult and listen to local leadership more. Despite your many years of experience as a corporate executive, these chapter leaders know more than you do about their community's demographics and the day-to-day realities in the field.
