Managment uses scare tactics to increase productivity

I have been working at American Society of Clinical Oncology full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

Great mission and most of the employees are really sweet.

Cons

Management micromanaging every single project and task you have. ROWE doesn't exist in the Membership Department, and makes it hard to have vacation or time off.. Management has unrealistic expectations with the work load, and the most disorganized department, then blame your time management skills for the reason deadlines aren't met. Salaries are low for how demanding and for how much training is involved.

Advice to Management

Please open your eyes and realize why the turn over is so high ... Is it really the employee, or is it the way the employees are treated and counterproductively micromanaged?

    Pros

The mission of the American Society of Clinical Oncology is wonderful. I enjoyed working with the membership and taking part in work surrounding committee meetings and the Annual Meeting. I had some good relationships with other staff.

    Cons

Unfortunately, the management within ASCO is not mission focused. After working with the organization for three years, I couldn't wait to leave. There were a lot of staff who expressed similar dissatisfaction with the work environment, but were unable to leave because of low pay (living paycheck to paycheck) and a bad economy. The organization is very hierachical and focused on the bottomline, making revenue. Management did not handle stress or crisis well and used intimidation to keep employees in line. Work/life balance was promoted as a benefit, but was allowed arbitrarily. People in some departments took it for granted that they would be teleworking after 6mos, while other employees were denied an opportunity to telework. Also, some employees abused a flexible work schedule and were never reprimanded while other employees were called on every infraction. HR is not to be trusted in this organization. If staff go to them with a question, the immediately notify management.

    Advice to Management

Show respect for staff. They are working hard every day to promote the mission of the organization and they are rarely given recognition. Overall, there is little that would improve the existing leadership - these people need to be replaced. ASCO has a habit of hiring leadership from within. In some companies this is a positive, but for ASCO the lack of a fresh perspective is a detriment. In the time I was there, several Senior Directors left and after "extensive searches" they were replaced with a Director from within the organization.
