Chain of command hinders transformation

Approves of CEO

Pros

Friendly people, strong emphasis on training, a non-evil public purpose, and a casual dress code.

Cons

Elaborate chain of command, fear of miscommunication leads to non-communication. Industry is in stage of dramatic change and it is not clear the company can manage it. Better positioned than other guarantee agencies, but that's not saying much. Friendly attitudes can mask issues-- you'll find out only later if you upset someone, when it's too late. Meetings and process take over everything and prevent progress.

Advice to Management

Don't waste yet another year planning the new media strategy-- by the time you're done planning, the world will be different again. You need to be faster at execution.

    No opinion of CEO

    Pros

It's just a place to go to work and forget about once you leave. Pay is alright along with the benefits. There's tuition reimbursement if that floats your boat.

    Cons

A bunch of lazy people mooching off others' work. Worst part of it all is that there is no real appreciation of the hardwork one puts in.

    Advice to Management

Make us feel important. Prepare us better for new roles. Give more chances of promotion and don't just give it to the ones who suck up.

American Student Assistance was the worst corporate job I have ever had.

    Pros

Very fair salary. Excellent benefits. Good work/life balance.

    Cons

American Student Assistance is not headed in any clear direction, largely due to the fact that its departments can't work together. Every company-wide American Student Assistance project is met with a power struggle. While employed by American Student Assistance, I was shuffled between 3 different bosses, each one with a different system of employee evaluation. My American Student Assistance departmental director was a nightmare--showing blatant favoritism, not being clear on expectations for projects, and, I believe, lacking the skills needed to do the job properly. American Student Assistance needs to learn how to leverage social media (like Facebook and Twitter) in order to reach it's student loan audience. American Student Assistance is an "old-fashioned" company that fears the online world because ASA won't be able to control what is said about them. ASA needs to get over this fear if they are going to stay afloat during these changes to the student loan industry.

    Advice to Management

American Student Assistance needs to hire a director who understands how social media works (rather than keep a director who farms the work out to contractors, outside vendors, and other associates). American Student Assistance also needs to facilitate better communication between departments so that projects actually get DONE. Paul Combe has an admirable vision, but his senior and junior management teams are sabotaging his efforts by treating each other and their employees so poorly.
