Pros

American Well has an excellent and talented team of developers, they are in an interesting sector within the technology field, and they use a common stack of technologies (e.g. Spring, Hibernate, etc.). Generally there are many opportunities to work on new and interesting projects, including iOS and Android mobile platforms.

Cons

The development process is rigid, despite arguments to the contrary there isn't a lot of value placed on addressing problems in infrastructure that have existed for years, often making bad code worse as it is maintained by more and more developers. Most of the value is placed on highly visible features and backend changes and improvements weigh less heavily.

Additional concerns are the lack of regular reviews and substandard benefits for a technology corporation.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your developers are this company's lifeblood. Take a look at the market for the greater Boston area and recognize that, unless salaries are more competitive and benefits revisited you run the risk of a crisis wherein developers will leave for better opportunities.

Beyond compensation, development and release life-cycles have grown too long. Focus on more releases with fewer features to get releases out to QA and customers quicker.

    Pros

Great company to work for with competitive benefits, the HR team is always adding new benefits each year. They also are always readily available to listen to ideas employees have and were always been very professional. Relaxed culture makes for a great working atmosphere and environment. It was also nice to see a lot of employees that were there from the start of the company are still present- that speaks volumes. Was great to be part of a company that is the future of healthcare. Overall great working experience!

    Cons

Little communication from upper management- but it seems it was improving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Open the lines of communication more often and with more frequent company updates.

I have been working at American Well full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

American Well has built an amazing product and is gaining recognition industry-wide, making it a very exciting place to be. It's a perfect place for people looking for a very fast-paced, always changing environment. In general, it's a great team and extremely smart group of hardworking people.

    Cons

There is basically no HR department to speak of, and it shows and is reflected in employees' general outlook. Many employees are overworked, benefits are subpar - no 401K match, minimal stock options, and employees frequently wind up seeking other job offers to have requests for a salary review taken seriously.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire an experienced VP (or higher) of HR. Place more emphasis on rewarding (and promoting) top performers.
