I worked at Amgen as a contractor for more than a year

Pros

Numerous benefits and perks for permanent employees. Coworkers are amicable and intelligent. Laid-back workday with many challenges and opportunities to learn.

Cons

Pervasive and growing use of contingent staff for core company functions. These "disposable workers" perform the same functions as permanent employees, yet have zero job security and lack even the most basic benefits such as sick pay and health insurance.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Think about the long-term effects of substituting permatemps for real employees. What do you suppose this does for morale and company loyalty?

Mixed -- good opportunities, but bureaucracy and corporate groupthink are increasing

    I worked at Amgen

    Pros

All the people at Amgen are very smart, and it is a great opportunity to grow and learn. There are plenty of internal opportunities for people who are willing and able to show a broad range of talents and apply skills against a range of dynamic problems.

    Cons

While the company was once a vibrant start-up, it is becoming obsessed with stock price, and bureaucracy and corporate groupthink are increasingly taking over.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Restructure the company as smaller research and development startups, and give sites more autonomy. It will be easier to integrate new acquisitions.
Also -- reinvigorate the commitment to patients and staff -- there has been too much emphasis on shareholders in the last 5 years.

I have been working at Amgen full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Decent compensation
    - Mostly casual culture
    - Great cafeteria

    Cons

    - Slowly killed all of the fringe benefits such as break room items, employee events etc.
    - They outsource like crazy, even things that shouldn't be outsourced
    - Management is extremely out of touch and disorganized. IT product launches are done with little-to-no planning
    - Cuts corners that end of costing them more in the long-run

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take two seconds and talk to your employees before making decisions. Also, stop being penny-wise and pound-foolish
