I worked at Amgen full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

The Thousand Oaks campus is beautiful.

Cons

Work-life balance is very difficult to achieve. They have succession plans, but I never saw someone agreed on as a successor get the job when the incumbent left. Management typically goes outside for senior people rather than develop from within. The company is currently being dismantled. Look for work in other cities that have more options.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make your planned cuts quickly and make sure all the 2nd mortgages people took to move to the area are forgiven in total. No one in TO is going to be able to sell their house now that you're cutting back anyway.

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Very smart colleagues, potential to do very interesting and important work. Potential to publish in good journals. Nice labs. Company has the resources to do great things. Compensation and benefits are competitive.

    Cons

Typical modern American capitalism. Company is run purely for the benefit of shareholders (not necessarily wrong, but can be counterproductive in this industry). Management is confused and reorganizations are frequent. Everything possible will be outsourced. Thousand Oaks is a wasteland and Amgen is the only game in town.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to the science instead of the stock price. Stop outsourcing research - you will get what you pay for. Thousand Oaks is a terrible place to recruit scientists to.

I have been working at Amgen full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Workplace is really beautiful, lots of meeting spaces outdoors. Culture of fitness and activity (cycling, walking, group sports). Competitive pay and benefits. Company's products change people's lives (feel good about where you work).

    Cons

I hear about the "glory days" of Amgen, where it seemed much more of a free spirited company, but since I've been here I've seen it get more and more stuffy and corporate. Excessive layers of management inhibit flexibility and innovation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You can still play savvy business without losing your sense of workplace enjoyment. Happy workers = better business!
