I worked at Amtrak full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good salary, health benefits and travel perks. The job was easy to learn and maintain. I worked there from 1993-1998 until I took a company buyout. I starter out at the Reservations Center and then ended my career at the L.A Station. I adored the station but was unable to hold a job there due to my seniority otherwise I would've never left.

    Cons

Some of the management could've used a refresher course in training and people skills.

I have been working at Amtrak full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Free train travel, especially in the north-east is a huge plus.

    Cons

People and processes are inefficient and slow. Very little accountability. Way too many managers, directors, business heads, etc. and very few work horses to do the grunt of the work. Growth is based on others retiring or quitting and rarely on personal strength. Thereby, people in leadership are in high positions because of lack of choice rather than personal strength.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold people accountable and take corrective action immediately. Promote individuals based on performance and not familiarity or lack of choice. Make every employee take the train once a month, because some people in key positions don't know their own product.
