I have been working at Amtrak full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Free train travel, especially in the north-east is a huge plus.

    Cons

People and processes are inefficient and slow. Very little accountability. Way too many managers, directors, business heads, etc. and very few work horses to do the grunt of the work. Growth is based on others retiring or quitting and rarely on personal strength. Thereby, people in leadership are in high positions because of lack of choice rather than personal strength.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hold people accountable and take corrective action immediately. Promote individuals based on performance and not familiarity or lack of choice. Make every employee take the train once a month, because some people in key positions don't know their own product.

I have been working at Amtrak full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

In house trained by the industries best to become a train dispatcher. They along with your fellow co-workers provide you with all the tools you need in order to be great at the job. No prior experience is necessary. Hourly pay is great.

    Cons

Union dues are extremely too high. In order to work overtime it must be done on a day off which prolongs your work week and shortens your " weekend".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management has tendencies to micro manage which causes frustration amongst the train dispatchers. In some cases, dispatchers are no more than puppets handing down orders from management who are themselves not to sure on how to resolve problems. Advice would be to let the train dispatchers DISPATCH, which is after all what they make 30-40$ an hour to do!
