I have been working at Anixter International full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

- Work life balance is great. family comes first and its easy to get time off to deal with family matters. When i leave the office I generally don't have to worry about work.
- Nice people to work with.
- Benefits are decent.

Cons

- in technology there are a lot of people who have been around a long time (20+ years). They don't seem too interested in moving forward. if you have any interest in doing new things prepare to be frustrated.
- management is haphazard

Advice to ManagementAdvice

When you bring in new people to the technology group make sure their voices are heard and not ignored by the old guard.

I worked at Anixter International full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Feared and cherished by industry partners. Great training, good corporate culture. Great launch point for industry insider status. Many great careers started here. Many of the industry's most respected people worked here up to the regional level. You can expect to see great career and personal growth the first three to five years.

    Cons

Oppressive layers of management - referred to commonly as "Resources." Commissions are capped due layers of "Resources" for support. With the ebb and tide of economic conditions sales floor becomes a boiler room. Management is insulated while sales staff is seen as expendable. When a sales person makes too much money after building their business a substantial sum is hacked off to create a new territory for a new rep to cut their teeth on while the veteran is assured he/she is a more important asset and can therefore rebuild more quickly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't lose sight of where the income is generated- phones and streets. Massive reporting requirements of the sales staff does not generate revenue but it does generate resentment. Spend less time showing your value to those you report to and more time to those who report to you.

I worked at Anixter International full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Short work days. Genuinely nice people to work with. Nice corporate HQ with cafeteria and laundry service.

    Cons

Pay is extremely low, hard to live off of if you choose to live downtown | Run the same reports day-in and day-out with not flexibility, middle management lacks leadership, lots of people following blindly and not driving change or improvement.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in management training, increase bonus opportunities and base salaries and conduct more "team building" to build morale.
