Stressful place to work at ruled by bureaucracy and micro-management. Teachers have no freedom.

I have been working at Anne Arundel County Public Schools

    Pros

If you have advanced degrees such as masters degree or Ph.D. and many years of experience like me, then the pay is decent. The healthcare (including dental and vision) benefits are good.

    Cons

The class sizes are huge (32-38 students per class), the buildings and all the furnishings inside are ancient, dilapidated, unpleasant, unappealing, and things are falling apart. The system is over regulated and the amount of bureaucracy is mind-boggling. Teachers have practically no freedom. There are all sorts of meeting just about every afternoon, teachers are required to do a number of different duties and frequently cover for other teachers - all together, one feels like one is constantly working and practically lives at school. Administrators are not very supportive or helpful at all. The students have all kinds of rights, and teachers must bend over backwards at all times. There is a test redo policy in place, which means that students don't take responsibility for their learning - they just figure they'll retake the tests. Teachers are constantly inundated with e-mails (from parents and administration) that need immediate attention. Students with all kinds of learning challenges and discipline issues are mixed in with "regular" students, which makes teaching even harder. Over all, it's a very stressful place to work at.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat teachers with more respect and trust, and realize that many of those meetings are unnecessary waste of time.

I worked at Anne Arundel County Public Schools

    Pros

Most of the co-workers were very nice people.

    Cons

    Incompetent management within the school.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn to manage more effectively instead of treating everything like a popularity contest and judging people's work by whether you like them, or not
