Pros

AOpen left a lot to be desired but it was not one of the worse places in the world. It gave me a lot of perspective on the right ways of doing things and the wrong ways of doing things.

In retrospect, I met a lot of people who worked hard and were genuinely interested in seeing the company grow and succeed, which is highly refreshing. Lot's of people here were friendly, just never got to the point of real friendships because everyone had to look out for themselves...which leads to...

Cons

Watching the constant political battles between department managers and the President gave me the understanding that you should look out for yourself and no on else. People will throw you under the bus as soon as it is convenient for them to do so and would not look back at all.

Culture here is constantly being experimented on and changed but never really for the better and sometimes for the worse. They implement ideas that they see in Start Ups and other Silicon Valley companies but the culture doesn't lend itself to be a sturdy base for those ideas to grow and become something. Instead, many of the ideas are poorly executed or not very well though out and it ends up being a cheap gimmick to raise employee morale or improve the atmosphere.

Speaking of culture, if you know how to speak Mandarin Chinese and weren't born in the United States, you could fit in here really well. The entire management team is Chinese and you would be able to fit into the cultural mentality much easier than someone who has never worked for a Taiwanese company.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

To the President: You constantly preached getting fresh blood and new ideas but maybe it's time for you to step down so that could actually happen.

    Pros

open work space, flexible work hours.

    Cons

To take an objective look back of the company is not easy. Out of a 35 person company, only the 7 from sales team are to blame when revenue drops year by year, month by month, as a result, sales team always have people come and go, come and go and the cycle continues. It is not hard for top management to see that there is virtually no marketing support, products are way overpriced and no one in the company has a clue of how to design an attractive solution product, but he never does anything about it and takes no action to address these cancer issues.
There is no rules in the company, maybe a rule of thumb, but that changes quickly also. Due to the lack of professionalism in the company, getting things done outside of your department is not a matter of other doing their job, it boils down to that person's mood of the day, or if you two a buddies. On top of that, management has to approve and get involved in every little detail of what you do, if you do it right, they would ask why you didn't report it first and if you do it wrong, they would question why you did it without proper approval.
Revenue is everything. While this can be directly used to as a measure on sales people, others are offered very low salary as management sees no value in operations or engineering.
A word of advice to other job seekers, this is not for the faint of heart. Low pay, high stress and zero chance of gain any work experience that is applicable elsewhere.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

President need to start look for root cause outside sales team and realize that zero existing marketing and a product offering that is misaligned with the market will lead to sales decline no matter how many times you layoff and rehire sales people. Since you're a fan of Apple, what did Steve Jobs do to save Apple? Did he do what you did or did he instead focused on creating a product that market actually was needed by consumers?

    I worked at Aopen America

    Pros

Very few good reasons. Initially, it felt like I was running my own territory. But that didn't last. I made some good friends there.

    Cons

The management has lost their way. They basically only sell hardware and don't understand why they can't get 35% or more margin on each deal. They do not know the competition and they have no understanding of the US market. If you do not speak Mandarin you are not privy to what they are thinking. They want to make money without spending money so they hire very marginal employees, especially in their San Jose office where the cost of living is very high. The mode of development is if we build it our customers will come. The engineers in Taiwan, never ask what is needed in the US so they build product that is not suited for this market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to put an American face on your efforts. You need to develop solutions instead of just hardware. We need to quit running a sweatshop environment in the US because that mentality will never attract the talent you need to succeed.
