Pros

Salaries and benefits are generous; telecommuting is encouraged especially in IT ; large company with multitude of opportunities throughout the company; employees are friendly and helpful and have been there for a long time

Cons

Poorly managed and lagging behind competition; consistent management turmoil and quarterly layoffs; lagging stock price and options; merger with Varian Semiconductor left power strife that is undermining company values and opening company up to more turmoil; greater than average turnover of employees

Advice to Management

Clearer vision and strategy to lead the company. Decide who is in charge Gary Dickerson or Mike Splinter and prevent more senior leadership attrition

    Pros

    - Experienced coworkers
    - Company resources
    - Customer focus

    Cons

    - Senior management lack of direction
    - Stock price
    - Living Quarter to Quarter
    - Outsourcing
    - Cutting medical benefits for employees
    - Continuous layoffs

    Advice to Management

Good recent change with the new President, and finally a focus back on the Silicon Group, unfortunately a lot of business/marketshare has already been lost over the past number of years.

Time for Mike Splinter to move on, and let Applied go back to being a growth company.

    Pros

Employee and customer focused messaging from Corporate perspective. Compensation structure (salary, bonus, RSU's, benefits) are competitive within Silicon Valley

    Cons

Industry is susceptible to severe downturns every 3-5 years resulting in corresponding employee downsizing events. The company has invested large sums in the Solar equipment space which is currently dominated by the Chinese. Even though the company has tried to rightsize the business to make it breakeven in the hopes of a turnaround, my feeling is this will be a fruitless effort in the long run

    Advice to Management

Stay focused on core technology in semiconductor manufacturing space.
