I have been working at Applied Materials (more than 10 years)

Pros

Good pay the closer ou are to the top

Cons

Nepotism
People from LAM and KLA brought in to new senior positions a step up for them in the move from their duck pond to the ocean. They have all the answers.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create a strong NCG in-flow investment. Promote from Within. Since most of the Senior management are new they should curb their arrogance and learn about what it takes to run a $10B company save they will find themselves in a company the size of where they left from.

Great group of Technologists and Engineers but the lack of career opportunities makes it a painful environment.

I have been working at Applied Materials full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Intellectually stimulating employees in the business units, compensation is up to par with market standards, and the Wellness Center (gym/physicians housed internally) is a positive addition to the Santa Clara campus

    Cons

Many political games- promotions based on relationships not performance, work/life balance poor-average of 50 hour work weeks, career opportunities are limited even if sought out, very little direction until the recent change in upper management and even still, it is most likely too late- it is a very slow moving company overall.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize employees for their performance and encourage more collaboration, regardless of title or business unit.

I have been working at Applied Materials full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

One of the only places in Silicon Valley where you can do scientific engineering work and be well paid. Capital equipment for semi and display is in a strong position that isnt' going anywhere soon. You may get lucky and be able to work on truly cutting edge stuff. Chance to impact future of semiconductor, display, or other technology world.

    Cons

Older workforce and a lot of institutional inertia. Young people get chewed up quick and there are many layers of management that are pretty much useless. Many many directors and middle managers overseeing a small number of overtaxed engineers doing menial tasks.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try something different. The merger with TEL is a good start. Think bigger, though.
