I have been working at Aptera Software part-time for more than a year

Pros

This is a great place for intelligent, creative people who chafe under top-heavy management. There's a real sense that everyone here values you and believes you have something worthwhile to contribute. The main principle seems to be to hire impressive people and set them loose on projects, either in teams or on their own. This openness to new ideas and approaches, along with the confidence everyone places in you, ends up being a much stronger incentive to do excellent work than any micromanaging and whip-cracking could ever be. It also helps to contribute to a fun atmosphere that makes coming to work every day a bit less like coming to work every day.

Cons

One drawback to the open culture at Aptera is that it's sometimes difficult to communicate and coordinate between the various departments. You're often asked to work with several people who have different ideas regarding what your project should entail. And that can lead to some frustration and a lot of starting over again from scratch.

Another con might also be considered a pro: Aptera is growing so rapidly right now some of the departments are in flux in terms of their protocols and structure. There are days you don't know which of the projects you're working on should be the main priority, and there are days you don't even know who you're supposed to be reporting to.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management actually seems to be aware of these issues already, judging from annual reviews and quarterly meetings.

    Pros

Latest technology is at work and being used. Smart and helpful colleagues. Great place to grow professionally and obtain new skills. Aptera will make you work for other companies in town too. Competitive salary.

    Cons

They boasting of hiring lots of new people and being a fast growing company. Think why? Because they loosing a lot of people too. They are not interested in retaining employees. While they think you are a bright employee, they'll use you. Once they don't need you they will terminate you quickly and without hesitation. Very aggressive management and mediocre office environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you plan to grow as a company, expand office and improve office comfort and attitude of middle management toward employees. Get rid of time cards.

    I worked at Aptera Software

    Pros

Two things make Aptera successful. One, the sales and marketing keep work coming in. Second, there is a small group of developers that are top notch, not just in programming but project management.

    Cons

The bad part is that these developers are not listened to. Very little requirements gathering is done. No real business analysis is done. No architecting is done. Since no up-front planning is done, projects frequently run over time. Instead of correcting the issue, they crack down on developers and expect them to work after hours without compensation. From an employee perspective, no information is given on policy changes. No information is provided on work expectations until after something happens. The environment is very clickish. If you aren't "in" with the department head, then you are ostracized and dismissed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seek feedback from your employees before you decide to whether they did something wrong. Clearly, it indicates you have no interest in fairness or truth. Quit making people go to meetings after hours just so you can tell them how many millions you made. Especially, when you won't spend the money necessary to do proper backups and provide industry standard tools to improve programming efficiency. Have performance evaluations for everyone, not just some of the employees. In the neaerly two years I had none, despite every six months asking for one.
