Good people and work/life, but almost impossible to move up or pursue long-term career objectives

I worked at Arch Coal full-time

    Pros

The organization truly values safety and environmental performance
Accessible executives willing to listen (if not act) to employee concerns
Not a sweat shop for the most part; outside of some departments 45-hour weeks are the expectation

    Cons

Tough time for industry; expect many more months of severe cutbacks and cost-cutting
VERY difficult to advance for the under-50 crowd; few senior managers leaving and most open positions filled externally
IT department lacks leadership and direction, which filters through to entire organization

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

It's critical to provide honest and real feedback to the young talent before every one of them leaves. Especially in times of cutbacks, it's important to provide hope (and compensation!) to the best of the next generation of leaders. Too many have left both the operations and the corporate office because they were just told to be patient without any reason to believe their patience would be rewarded
