Former Employee - Product Manager  in  Pittsburgh, PA
Former Employee - Product Manager in Pittsburgh, PA

Pros

Majority of the employees are young and eager to work. Benefits are decent and it's a relaxed work environment. Ariba has brand name customers (like P&G, Pfizer, Royal Bank of Scotland, etc.) and interacting with those customers can be a rewarding experience and could possibly result in a job at one of thos customers.

Cons

Middle management that never leaves and impedes all progress/change. The software/solutions are really a niche that will likely never earn a profit. Change takes so long that most people stop trying to accomplish change and just go with the flow.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

RIF the Mid Management Tier and Promote. Stop rewarding yourself with so many stock options.

Current Employee - Customer Support Assistant in Pittsburgh, PA

    Pros

Good place for an entry-level job. Free beer on Fridays, Very Good health benefits, and you get 4 weeks of time of feven if you're brand new (if your manager allows you to take it), young, fun work environment. You can wear jeans and a sweatshirt to work every day.

    Cons

In many cases, there is very little room for advancement unless you switch departments. Management is very pie-in-the-sky and is not at all receptive to new ideas. Ariba has a terrible retention rate of new employees. The Customer Support department is are required to work all holidays when the rest of the company is off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat employees like they actually matter, rather than just bodies answering a phone so that you can meet your service levels.

Be prepared to work hard but the rewards are there.

    Pros

In general it's a hard-working, motivated, performance-driven workforce. They expect everyone to give their best, and exceptional performance is recognized and rewarded e.g. every quarter an employee is selected for Employee of the Quarter, it's not just for sales people but can be from any part of the organization.

Ariba does pay attention to its employees' needs, for example the employee wellness program is more than just fluffy emails about health, the company pays for flu shots and works with local gyms to offer discounts. Free beer on Friday after work (in the Pittsburgh office anyway - a Freemarkets tradition that carried on) is not to be sneezed at!

In this recessionary economy, Ariba's target market is a healthy place to be - helping organizations reduce their spending and increase control of expenses. So the company's prospects seem solid, which is good news for stability of employment. The products are pretty good too, and the shift to On-Demand SAAS has been a success.

    Cons

The company is very careful with its pennies (after all its business is spend management). The allowances and restrictions are reasonable but far from lavish. EG on a business trip, you pay for your own lunch. Waa waa waa but hey, you would have paid for it yourself if working at your regular office. On the other hand, they did throw a good holiday party in Pittsburgh this year, when many other companies cancelled theirs.

Be prepared to work some very long hours, this company gets a lot done with a little and that means working smart AND long ! It frequently can cut deep into personal & family time, weekends, even vacation time if you're not out of contact. So leave the Blackberry in your desk. This work ethic is common with Silicon Valley tech companies, Ariba's no different.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Nothing in particular, from my vantage point they appear to be doing their jobs well.
