Current Employee - Consultant Engineer in Bangalore (India)

I have been working at Ariba full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Company is located in the heart of city close to all landmarks.

    Cons

Engineers do defect fixing 95% of their time.

Managers are not technically sound. They do not have domain knowledge either.
Engineers who develop personal good personal relations with their managers do well in the company even if they do not contribute to software bug fixing. To be promoted you have to somehow get into the 'inner circle' of Indian management, no amount of useful work to the company will earn you a promotion in Ariba india.

There are fancy designations like 'Director' etc. but they give no direction to either the product or release or anything. They are just functioning 'Hiring managers' who don't even do that role properly.

(Senior) managers are the old timers who got into the 'inner circle' and just enjoy the privileges that come with the role.

The only job Senior Management in India does is blindly carry out orders of the managers in US, without providing them correct information, feed back about things that happen in India which results in poor decision making. HR is just for namesake, they just do a recruiters role.

HR is like an embedded recruiting agency within the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

No advice can be given to Indian senior management because of the following reasons:

Indian senior management - They have no technical/domain(spend management) skills, and they survive by blindly following orders from US AFTER providing US managers wrong data/information. If someone advices them to do get independent, that means they have to take responsibility for their actions, which they are not capable of. So they just play safe, pocket their salary and go home.

    US senior management -

    Low level US managers:
Some of the managers in US are worried about jobs getting moved offshore and there-fore they are happy to promote and entertain incompetent Indian mangers. Only advice to give them is to think of new features for the products that will create lots of work so they their fear of loosing their jobs can be reduced.

    High level US managers:
Should look deep into the functioning of lower level US managers and Indian managers and check whether their behavior is line with the long term goals of the company.

    Doesn't Recommend
