If you're over 40, this might be a good place to work; otherwise don't bother.

    Pros

    Good benefits & time off
The aging workforce should create job openings growth and opportunities to promote change over the next decade

    Cons

Political work environment - If you want to get anywhere, you need to kiss up. (This may not be quite so true in all departments, but overall sycophancy is strongly encouraged.)
Siloed - Business units do a very poor job collaborating.
Bureacratic - Orders come from the top down. Leaders ignore their employees. Do what you're told, not what you think is actually best for the company. Seniority outweighs merit.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you're trying to recruit a new generation of APS employees, empower them and build a culture that meets their needs and tastes. Instead, leadership is focused on establishing a corporate dress code.

Supposedly the company offers great benefits, but the centerpiece is a pension plan that is 30% underwater as of 12/31/2011. The health benefits are good for older employees with high health expenses, but a healthy young employee needs to pay a $1,000 annual deductible before receiving any benefit. And the supposed education/career development reimbursement is really reserved for managers and senior professionals.

Used to be a great place to work

I worked at Arizona Public Service Company

    Pros

The retirement options are better than most places. If you are a full time employee you can easily coast on 8 hours a day and check out. Coming out on top as a great employee is easy because there are plenty of employees who aren't fully competent regarding their duties.

    Cons

Corporate culture is stressful. The changes to the IT organization have devastated the organization and the bleeding hasn't stopped. Getting things done is hard because of all the wrong process and documentation gets in the way. Waterfall is heavily used to the point of being comedic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The IT organization needs to take a hard look at itself, look outside, follow industry standards and needs to stop thinking they are the smartest people ever which causes excessive amounts of complexity that serves no purpose and increases technical debt. Compensate your employees for what they are worth and let them know you care, stop treating them like assets and treat them like people. Management shouldn't feel like they are on a throne, come off it and relate to your team.
