I have been working at Army and Air Force Exchange full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

The mission - to support our military and their families. A chance to travel and see the world, in the right job. Decent salary, good pension and benefits. If they can turn it around it will return to being a really great place to work.

Cons

HQ has lost focus on the mission. Policies are implemented inconsistently - some favored divisions always seem to be able to add people and promote them even when everyone else is "frozen" or losing valuable talent. Too much emphasis on profits over service to customers.

I have been working at Army and Air Force Exchange full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good benefits, flexible work schedules, great to work for and with our Military service members and families.

    Cons

Micro managed, high turnover rate of upper management, very little recognition for doing a great job, management seems to promote their favorites instead of actually who is qualified for the job. Lots of gossipy, high schoolish behavior is tolerated instead of addressed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management would be wise to hire more from within and in a fair way. More opportunities for advancement and the pay is terrible. Most have to get a second job just to get by.

Decent company, good benefits, terrible location (HQ)

I have been working at Army and Air Force Exchange full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Stable company, pays well starting out but salary competitiveness tapers off for most fields once you receive a few promotions.

Great benefits and one of the few companies that still has a pension.

Family values, decent work/life balance, have been treated very well.

Gym, convenience store, and several restaurants on site at HQ building.

    Cons

Management likes to move everyone around constantly so there are never experts on anything and everyone is always learning a new job. Most upper management has been here 20+ years and does not have a good grasp of how things are done in the "outside world" or how to make changes that appeal to a younger generation.

HQ building is falling apart with no plans to relocate and is located in a terrible part of Dallas, requiring at least a 30-40 minute commute if you don't want to get robbed.

Because of HR/union/government rules, once a person has been here more than a year it is extremely difficult to fire them. There are a large number of completely unqualified employees who keep getting passed around but should be fired instead.

For someone joining the company with a bachelor's degree, career progression stalls pretty substantially after the first couple promotions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create more paths for development and grow experts instead of shuffling everyone around constantly. Relocate to a less dangerous area, allowing people to live closer to work.
