I worked at Army and Air Force Exchange part-time (more than an year)

Pros

If you are a military spouse you have job preference at new duty stations and you will be able "to go where you go". If you are a civillian you are a DOD Employee and get a Cac Card. You get shopping privileges worldwide at all exchanges(AAFES, NEX). High turnover rate so there's usually always a job opening.

Cons

High turnover rate so rules and policies change frequently. They really like "acting" supervisors/managers, and most times whoever was acting usually doesn't get the permanent job. The only company that'll protect a manager that's abusive. HR is understaffed and overworked.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Implement more employee reward programs or think up new ways to boost morale. The store manager/sr management makes such a difference. Never talk down to your employees, be the type of manager that will help load bricks into a customers car or help sell a tv.

    Pros

AAFES has the ability to be very selective in its hiring process and, as a result, they usually end up with good people. They care about their employees and provide many benefits, even to part time employees. Depending on the department, they can very flexible with their employees and try to keep them happy.

    Cons

Most regular employees are part-time. While still eligible for good benefits, this limits available pay.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase pay. Your employees service a single demographic group that deserves the best possible service. In order to keep good people around and ensure they are doing their best, pay them for it. Then, make sure you show them how they are paid better than Wal-Mart, Target, etc.

I have been working at Army and Air Force Exchange part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Positive people; positive atmosphere; encouraging staff; fabulous customers! This is a pleasant work environment and the overall staff are exceptional. Teamwork is unsurpassed and the bad seeds get weeded out :) ! A good thing!!! This is a fun place to work with a lot of potential room for advancement. Once you are part time (regular) or full time -- the sky's the limit! The benefits are unsurpassed at that level.

    Cons

The pay isn't all it's cracked up to be. Actually it is below state minimum wage to start.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raise the pay to keep top quality employees
