Pros

As an IT project and business process consultancy, Ascend does a number of things well. They have significant experience within their business verticals, Financial Service and Insurance. As a strategy, they work hard to staff engagements locally both for clients, to keep costs down, and for employees, to allow for work-life balance that is not a given for consultants. The caliber of project typically involves reporting to a client VP or above.

Cons

Reactive vs. proactive. The recent recession has demonstrated that more can be done to diversify client base to try and limit downside sales/revenue exposure in cost cutting times. Internal operations maturity takes a back seat and often the same areas of focus are highlighted and discussed with little tangible development/improvement.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Provide guidance and follow through on strategic initiatives. Be sure that the actions from the top, match the words and ideas that are discussed/reviewed. Reward client extensions for consultants who continuously earn them. Being small compared to Big 4 should be a good thing, nimble, flexible, attentive, focused - Act small.

    I worked at Ascend Consulting full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    A management team that cares about its people with a focus on balancing work and personal life. Fellow employees also felt the same way so a very supportive environment. Client engagement managers stood up for employees to the clients and always worked with the client and employee, rather than just blaming the employee ... you always felt that Ascend would stand up for your interests as much as everyone else's ... a very fair process. The leadership was easy to talk to and truly appreciated the people that worked there.

    Cons

    Because everyone was dispersed at client locations, building culture was very tough and difficult to see significant improvements. A somewhat reactive company that responds to problems well but doesn't seem to do enough to stop them from happening in the first place. Clients are not as diverse as company would like them to be with a heavy focus on financial services and insurance at certain key clients.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Some people become consultants to move around from client to client and building diversity there would go a long way.
