Current Employee - Software Engineer in Oakland, CA
Current Employee - Software Engineer in Oakland, CA

I have been working at Ask.com full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

New tools and technologies are being used since they keep creating new products. The office environment looks good and very close to BART. You will see flexible environment and very good work environment.

Cons

They always lose talented employees and relying on contractors, Because few contractors(US SEM Lead) own the entire responsibility and they don't hear / share knowledge with Full time employees. Over the period, the Full time employee becomes powerless and goes out.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

You need to have the control, i don't want to work UNDER contractor.

Met some great people, but they are overshadowed by poor management and VP level cliques.

    I worked at Ask.com full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - A decent stepping stone. Get your feet wet in the industry, but don't stay too long.
    - Unlimited snacks.
    - Being part of IAC/InterActiveCorp, you'll meet many talented individuals across many different properties.

    Cons

    - Cliques.
    - No room for growth unless you are VP level or above. It is completely demoralizing being treated like a 2nd class citizen.
    - If upper management doesn't like you, they will find a way to get rid of you, even if you are doing a great job.
    - Ask is a bottom level search engine at heart hanging on only because of the big "G". Once that contract goes away, Ask will fall apart.
    - Many employees are in "Maintenance Mode" and just hanging on for the paycheck while searching for a better gig. Employee Morale is dangerously low.

I worked at Ask.com full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Helpful and friendly co-workers, can get things done quickly, good learning opportunities, flexible hours and unlimited PTO, good pay and benefits

    Cons

Leadership team is clueless (no strategy and no people management skills either) with all the power held by 2-3 people. This leads to a chaotic environment with no direction, resulting in no productivity.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The Engineering team (who can build great products to attract users) should be the most powerful team in a technology company, not the teams that bring in ad revenue.
