I have been working at AstraZeneca full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Great people, for the most part good work-life balance, flexible schedules, diversity focused. Potential for remote working once/week.

Cons

Difficult to keep focused when the ax is always swinging over head, due to cuts or potential cuts. The uncertainty however is what most in pharma are experiencing today. Flatter and flatter organization good and bad. Promotions are taking longer and longer.

OK place to work, but don't count on a long career.

I worked at AstraZeneca full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Salary and Benefits are good. Policies on telecommuting, tuition reimbursement, parental leave, etc. are very employee friendly.

    Wilmington, DE campus is nice.

    Cons

I recommend AstraZeneca only as a job for "right now," not a career.

Stress level is high. Workload is high. Few people take all their vacation days. Many leaders and employees have difficulty with this environment which causes poor interpersonal behavior and decision making.

Formerly critical functions such as Clinical Development, Medical Information and customer facing Sales are broadly outsourced now.

Employee headcount is being shifted out of the US and Western Europe and into emerging markets of Latin America, Russia and China. Solid business strategy, but career opportunities in the US have shrunk drastically.

Promotions are offered first to the small "talent pool," excluding average employees from even applying for many jobs.

Formal development programs are available only for very senior executives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Select only those employees and leaders who support the company strategy and changes. Let go those who are only passing time waiting for their severance package and retirement benefits.
