Former Employee - Administrative Assistant in Atlanta, GA
Former Employee - Administrative Assistant in Atlanta, GA

I worked at Atlanta Public Schools full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Holidays, Weekends and Summers off
Although you might work a 9-5 day seems less hetic once students and teachers leave.(ironic)

Cons

APS does not believe in teamwork and you get used as a sacrificial tool when someone is trying to save theirself. Higher ups don't follow protocol or rules don't exist in their world.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

It should be about the children not about your resume.

    Pros

making a difference, beginning salary for a new teacher, if principal is good- autonomy in the classroom to do what kids need

    Cons

bureaucracy, heavy with politics, particularly black sorority/fraternity inside connections, whole system lack of focus on children, general leadership mediocracy

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Current Employee - Educator in Atlanta, GA
Current Employee - Educator in Atlanta, GA

I have been working at Atlanta Public Schools full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

APS is a beast in itself. However the students need dedicated teachers who are willing to meet them where they are and provide relevant, applicable experiences academically and about life in general.

    Cons

If you are not "of" APS survival can be tough. Sometimes the administrators forget they were once teachers, and some do not know how to divide professional and personal dealings.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Once the new super gets started things will head in the right direction. APS will then be about the students and not about rank, status, and the adults.
