I worked at Atlassian as a contractor (less than an year)

Pros

Amazing benefits and perks. Very spacious and beautiful office, games, free sandwhich bar and ready made food, 3 kegs on tap, yoga on site, etc.

Also very open office culture - only glass walls, you can always walk up to anybody. Executive team sits in the pit - accessible to all and not sitting above the employees.

Cons

Time Zone difference between Sydney and San Francisco office can require off-hours meetings late at night or during the very early morning.

It can be difficult to seek privacy and quiet without seeming secretive. Introverted employees might have issues in this environment if they preferred their own office.

The total open office culture leads to employees wearing head phones all the time and isolating themselves acoustically from the crowd. That hinders collaboration again.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the spirit going and try your best to maintain the culture as the company grows further.

Poor salaries and founders looking to exit

I have been working at Atlassian full-time

    Pros

Atlassian is a good place to work if you are a first year graduate. You will be challenged by the coding and you'll get a lot of free food and t-shirts. That's about it though.

    Cons

First of all, the salaries are not competitive (about $10K - $20K less than market for the privilege of working there). The management at Atlassian is dysfunctional. There are 2 CEO's who don't agree much and don't really talk to the employees much anymore (they're too busy having pictures of themselves taken with NERF guns). The senior management team have for the most part been outgrown by their roles and everyone (including senior managers) talks about how they took a pay cut for the role.

    So there's that.

Then there's the in crowd... Atlassian has a clique. If you're not a male and not in the clique (and it's all just guys by the way, only one senior female manager in the company - check the website) then forget about getting anywhere in the company.

It is an open secret at Atlassian that the founders are looking to get out. They've made their money, they promise they'll take care of their employees with stock, and at the same time they're giving stock away like candy to new hires. That dilutes everyone else's holding.

The company is hiring like crazy, but being turned down by a lot of potential hires for various reasons, mainly salary. You need to worry when the die-hard employees start leaving and the new ones aren't tempted to join.

When people complain they're told "look at all this free stuff you get...". So yeah that's ok, but you need a lot of twizzlers and beer to make up the pay deficiency. Oh and free beer? The beer taps are locked.

Atlassian is just another company with some free shirts and candy at the office.
