Current Employee - Design Engineer  in  San Jose, CA
Current Employee - Design Engineer in San Jose, CA

Pros

Bay Area's nice weather, really. There are many engineers from design to testing who are really good and passionate at what they do.

Cons

Do not have any hope as an engineer. If you are a political activist who lives to tell other people how to do what you yourself never was and will never be able to do yourself, then Atmel is your place. Instead of investing company's cash into the Colorado fab to create American jobs, the executives decide to buy back the company stock with shareholders' money to artificially keep up the stock price so they make more own money selling their stock options. Why would anyone give money to Atmel by buying Atmel stock when
Atmel's board decides to use the same money to buy back the same shares?! What value added can come from this speculation?

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Chips are not made by mba's. Standard practices include not only personnel reviews and layoff procedures, but also engineering continuing education. Promoting technical innovation is not recognized as a company core value except as a derivative of much broader formulations.

    Pros

Laid back work culture, could make you feel sometimes that you are on a vacation :)
    No hard deadlines in engineering
Please manager to stick around or grow :)
Good place to retire or join after 50 years of age

    Cons

    Slow or no career growth
When issue comes, politics and finger-pointing starts and a work around evolves
Poor leadership in some groups (like memory product group, specially in marketing)
Too much focus by company on planning, IT and legal groups

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value non-management engineering employees before rewarding heavy stocks and pay to management.
Look at growing memory products by change in management

Overall friendly work environment, but serious lack of communication.

    Pros

Atmel is a friendly place to work. Good hours, easy for time off if needed for personal reasons.

    Cons

The SAP system is poorly maintained. Most of the system is custom which is normally fine but there is no understanding by associates as to where their input is going or what it effects downstream. Most of the company works in silos. The SAP system is not understood by upper management and because of this, the foundation for the system will never grow. Constant issues surrounding their master data between open orders for 8 years or associates with open access changing data to meet their needs. The company spends more time manipulating their data to pull simple reports.

Associates a grossly underpaid and taught to never think or understand what they are doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to understand what they have on the system and how it works before its too late.
