Pros

This is a local business and small company. You won't get lost in an expansive swarm of entry level college grads from IVY league schools, so don't worry about being "big leagued". They are ALWAYS HIRING (check craigslist austin now) and if you need a 12/hr job, its for you!

The Model is to simply use a web template in wordpress, hire college grads to write articles, manage hired SEO people (also 12/hr) and PPC and then advertise themselves as a full service advertising agency to Attorneys. They run the business in the owners home living room located off Burnet and Koenig, and also have an office off Lamar.

Free Coffee! They offered up some free gym/yoga membership but I wasn't interested.

Cons

First of all, this is a woman owned family business and is deeply Nepotistic. If you are a man, do not work here.

Daily operations are handled by the owners niece, who lives on the other side of the country in Minnesota and controls everything via IM and phone calls every 10 minutes or so. She gave herself the title of 'Vice President of Business Development', and has absolutely NO Technology skills.

Sadly, some personal issues transcend into extreme micromanagement and condescension. Be prepared to engage an extreme contrarian. Accordingly, based on her Linkedin, this is her first job after going to a private college.

To my understanding, nobody has worked at this company longer than 2 years other than family members. Many of my co-workers were looking for other jobs while at the office.

Advice to Management

Value your key players and relinquish management to a true manager.

    Pros

Attorneys Online is an ideal place for starting one's journey into the professional world. As a staff writer, you get to experience the ins ands of writing copy, SEO, and general marketing. The nature of the company also offers an opportunity to learn about a variety of different legal practices, although the clients are mainly firms interested in personal injury and bankruptcy cases.

The dress code is casual, as is the work environment. From time to time, there are even dogs. You're allowed to listen to wear headphones, and you pretty much get carte blanche for arranging your workspace. The office is centrally located and parking is a breeze.

You won't change the world working at Attorneys Online, but if you're looking for an 8-to-5 that lets you stretch your writing skills and work in an office without the usual corporate nonsense, you can do no wrong by accepting a position here.

    Cons

Most employees are paid by the hour. While the pay rate is very reasonable, the hourly policy means that taking a sick day or two can seriously compromise your income. Additionally, paychecks were given out on the 1st and 16th of every month, meaning that your ultimate take-home pay could greatly fluctuate depending on how many business days there were in the pay period.

The work can be tedious but manageable. The only time that things "stresscalate" are during occasional crunch periods or client visits.

Opportunities for advancement arise from time to time, but are greatly predicated on the departure or termination of someone else.

    Advice to Management

The pay rate is great, but in a perfect world, everyone could get paid on salary, not just the editors or management.

    Pros

Dogs allowed in office, dogs allowed in office, free water

    Cons

No growth, you work to maintain owners income & will leave with nothing to show for it.
The clients could do the jobs they pay this company for themselves, but are fooled into thinking its a 40 hour a week job

    Advice to Management

If you are happy with maintaining, keep doing what you do.
If you are looking to grow and have employees be a part, think about more than yourself.
