I have been working at Austin ISD full-time for more than 10 years

Pros

Teachers and administration in this district work hard and take pride in what they do.
All of the schools seem very well funded. Lots of programs, lots of specialists, lots of intervention.

Cons

The current superintendent's ideas about student discipline and the removal system is misguided.
She calls the alternatives schools "pipelines to prison" as if the alternative schools are leading children to a lifetime of incarceration.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rethink the cost to the home campuses (and their students) by reducing their number of removals purely to keep numbers down.

I worked at Austin ISD full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Austin is a great, vibrant city of young professionals and creative types. With smart folks everywhere, there is a sense that things could turn around in the schools.

    Cons

However, the size of the district prevents nimble decision making that allows for appropriate actions to take place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Motivate and encourage change by allowing a results only model to take hold.

I worked at Austin ISD part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Can increase pay significantly if willing to work regularly, some opportunities to expand if they are available, some long term assignments are possible and if you enjoy teaching they keep you doing ti

    Cons

unpredictable hours, you have to wake up at 5 am to be ready for calls if you aren't already scheduled. tend to work in the same places with jobs that are with special needs and can be very demanding and frustrating, no help from any staff from a school,

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

provide more support and training to subs so they are not doing the students a disservice by being there.
