Former Employee - Teacher in Austin, TX
Former Employee - Teacher in Austin, TX

I worked at Austin ISD full-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

Benefits are relatively good. Enjoyed the other faculty members and staff.

Cons

Administrator was very poor and unprofessional. The administrator would refuse to collaborate or listen to faculty. Morale was very low at the school.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Read the employee climate surveys. Do not keep administrators around that the faculty and parents are unhappy with.

    Fulfilling, but Exhausting

I have been working at Austin ISD full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Great colleagues, and a dedicated and optimistic management.

    Cons

Technical jobs like mine frequently lack technology, which makes teaching hard. The culture of testing, testing, testing all falls on the teachers; there's somebody in your room observing and assessing nearly every day. It's demoralizing and often insulting.

    Recommends
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

I have been working at Austin ISD full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Teachers and administration in this district work hard and take pride in what they do.
All of the schools seem very well funded. Lots of programs, lots of specialists, lots of intervention.

    Cons

The current superintendent's ideas about student discipline and the removal system is misguided.
She calls the alternatives schools "pipelines to prison" as if the alternative schools are leading children to a lifetime of incarceration.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Rethink the cost to the home campuses (and their students) by reducing their number of removals purely to keep numbers down.

    Recommends
    Positive Outlook
    Approves of CEO
